Hydrogen's line spectrum is grouped into named series (Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, Brackett, Pfund, Humphreys); Bohr's model explains this well for hydrogen but breaks down for multi-electron atoms, magnetic/electric field effects, and violates the uncertainty principle.

(i) Spectral series of the hydrogen atom (any four)

The hydrogen atomic spectrum consists of several series of lines, each named after its discoverer and defined by the lower energy level (n1) to which the electron falls:

  1. Lyman series — transitions to n1 = 1 (ultraviolet region)
  2. Balmer series — transitions to n1 = 2 (visible region)
  3. Paschen series — transitions to n1 = 3 (infrared region)
  4. Brackett series — transitions to n1 = 4 (infrared region)
  5. (Also valid: Pfund series, n1 = 5; Humphreys series, n1 = 6 — both infrared)

Any four of these are acceptable.

(ii) Limitations of Bohr's model of the atom

  1. It could not explain the line spectra of atoms other than hydrogen, i.e., multi-electron atoms (it works only for one-electron species like H, He+, Li2+).
  2. It failed to account for the finer details (doublet structure, fine splitting) of the hydrogen spectrum observed with sophisticated spectroscopic techniques.
  3. It could not explain the splitting of spectral lines in the presence of a magnetic field (Zeeman effect) or an electric field (Stark effect).
  4. It could not explain the ability of atoms to form molecules by chemical bonds. …
