Enthalpy (H = U + PV) is the heat content of a system at constant pressure; entropy (S) measures a system's disorder.

  1. Enthalpy of a system: Enthalpy (H) is a thermodynamic state function defined as: H = U + PV where U is the internal energy of the system, P is pressure, and V is volume. Since H is a state function, DeltaH depends only on the initial and final states, not the path taken. At constant pressure, the heat exchanged by a system with its surroundings (qp) equals the change in enthalpy: DeltaH = qp. A negative DeltaH (heat released) means the process is exothermic; a positive DeltaH (heat absorbed) means it is endothermic. Enthalpy changes are used to quantify heats of reaction, formation, combustion, etc.
  2. Entropy of a system: Entropy (S) is a thermodynamic state function that measures the degree of randomness, disorder, or the number of ways energy/matter can be distributed within a system. Mathematically, for a reversible process, the change in entropy is: DeltaS = q(reversible) / T …
