Enthalpy H = U + PV (heat content at constant P); entropy = degree of disorder. A spontaneous process has delta G < 0 (negative).

(i)(a) Enthalpy (H): the heat content of a system at constant pressure. It is defined as H = U + PV, where U is the internal energy. At constant pressure the heat absorbed or released by the system equals its enthalpy change, qp = delta H.

(b) Entropy (S): a thermodynamic quantity that measures the degree of randomness or disorder of a system. Greater disorder means higher entropy (gases > liquids > solids).
