Degree of freedom counts the independent ways a system can store energy; the general relation is f = 3N - k, where N is the number of particles and k the number of constraints.

Degree of freedom (f) of a dynamical system is defined as the total number of independent coordinates (or independent modes of motion) required to completely specify the position and configuration of the system in space. Equivalently, it is the number of independent ways in which the system can possess energy.

General relation: For a system of N particles, each free particle needs 3 independent coordinates (x, y, z) to specify its position, giving a maximum of 3N degrees of freedom. However, if the particles are connected/constrained by k independent relations (e.g. rigid bonds fixing distances between atoms in a molecule), each such constraint removes one degree of freedom. So:

f = 3N - k
