Newton's second law is called the real law of motion because the first and third laws can both be derived from it as special cases.

Newton's second law states F = dp/dt = ma (for constant mass).

Deriving the first law from the second: if the net external force F = 0, then dp/dt = 0, i.e. p = constant, so the body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force — this is exactly Newton's first law. So the first law is the special case of the second law when F = 0.

Deriving the third law from the second: consider two isolated bodies 1 and 2 interacting only with each other (no external force). By conservation of momentum for this isolated system, d(p1 + p2)/dt = 0, so dp1/dt = -dp2/dt. By the second law, dp1/dt = F21 (force on 1 due to 2) and dp2/dt = F12 (force on 2 due to 1). Hence F21 = -F12, which is Newton's third law (action and reaction are equal and opposite).
