Newton's first and third laws can both be derived as consequences of the second law, which is why the second law is regarded as the fundamental (real) law of motion.

Newton's Three Laws of Motion:

  1. First law (law of inertia): A body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a net external force.

  2. Second law: The rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied net force and takes place in the direction of the force: F = dp/dt = m (dv/dt) = m a (for constant mass).

  3. Third law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. If body A exerts a force F(AB) on body B, then body B exerts a force F(BA) = -F(AB) on body A.

Why the second law is the 'only real' law:

(a) The first law is contained within the second law as a special case. If the net external force F on a body is zero, then from F = dp/dt = 0, we get p = constant, i.e. if the body was at rest it stays at rest, and if moving it continues with the same uniform velocity — exactly the statement of the first law. So the first law does not need to be stated independently; it emerges from the second law when F = 0.
