Pascal's law says pressure applied anywhere in an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally in all directions without loss; it underlies devices like the hydraulic lift and hydraulic brakes.

Statement of Pascal's law. If the pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is changed, the change is transmitted equally and undiminished to every other point of the fluid, and also to the walls of the containing vessel, regardless of the shape or size of the container. In other words, pressure applied at any point of an enclosed liquid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid.

Applications:

  1. Hydraulic lift (hydraulic press): A hydraulic lift consists of two cylinders of different cross-sectional areas, connected by a pipe and filled with an incompressible liquid. A small force applied on the smaller-area piston creates a pressure that, by Pascal's law, is transmitted undiminished through the liquid to the larger-area piston, producing a much larger force there (since Force = Pressure x Area). This is used to lift heavy loads (e.g. cars in a service station) using a comparatively small applied force. …
