Stress is internal restoring force per unit area, strain is the fractional deformation produced, and elasticity is the body's ability to recover its original shape/size after the deforming force is removed.

Stress: When a deforming force is applied to a body, internal restoring forces develop within it to oppose the deformation. Stress is defined as this internal restoring force acting per unit area of cross-section:

Stress = F / A (units: N/m^2 or Pa)

Stress can be tensile, compressive, or shear, depending on the type of deformation.

Strain: Strain is the fractional (or relative) change produced in the dimensions of a body due to an external deforming force. It is a dimensionless ratio.

Strain = change in dimension / original dimension

e.g. longitudinal strain = Delta L / L (change in length / original length); volumetric strain = Delta V / V; shear strain = angle of shear.
