Planning is a logical, step-by-step process: it starts with setting objectives and ends with follow-up action after implementation.

Process of Planning:

  1. Setting objectives: every plan starts by specifying the objective(s) the organisation wants to achieve — clearly and in a way that can be measured.
  2. Developing premises: planning is done for the future, which is uncertain; premises are assumptions about the future environment (economic conditions, government policy, competitor behaviour) on which the plan will be based.
  3. Identifying alternative courses of action: once objectives and premises are set, there are usually several ways to achieve the objective; all reasonable alternatives are listed.
  4. Evaluating alternative courses: the pros and cons of each alternative are weighed against the premises and objectives (cost, risk, resources, feasibility).
  5. Selecting an alternative: the best alternative, or sometimes a combination of alternatives, is chosen — this is the real point of decision-making in planning.
  6. Implementing the plan: the selected plan is put into action by deciding who does what, by when, and allocating the necessary resources.
  7. Follow-up action: the plan's implementation is monitored continuously; actual results are compared to targets, and corrective action/revision is taken if required. …
