Imagine you are the captain of a school cricket team. You have eleven players to manage. Can you personally keep an eye on every single player's practice, batting technique, and fielding position all at once? Probably not — you would need a vice-captain and a few senior players to help you supervise the rest. That instinct — realising one person can only directly oversee a limited number of people — is the seed of the Span of Management.

What is Span of Management?

In formal management, the Span of Management (also called Span of Control) refers to the number of subordinates a manager can directly and effectively supervise. It answers the question: How many people should report to one boss?

The NCERT textbook defines it as "the number of subordinates a manager can efficiently and effectively direct." The key word here is effectively — it is not about how many people you can theoretically manage, but how many you can manage well.

Why does it matter?

The span of management directly shapes the structure of an organisation. If a manager has a wide span (many subordinates), the organisation becomes flat — fewer layers of management, faster communication, but less direct supervision. If the span is narrow (few subordinates), the organisation becomes tall — more layers, closer supervision, but slower decision-making and higher costs.

Think of a school principal. The principal cannot directly supervise every teacher in every classroom. Instead, the principal supervises vice-principals and department heads (say, 4–6 people).
