The staffing process is a chain of steps that begins with estimating how many and what kind of people are needed, and ends with compensating and appraising them once employed.

Steps involved in the staffing process:

  1. Estimating manpower requirements: assessing the number and type of personnel needed, in terms of both quantity (how many) and quality (what skills/qualifications), through workload and workforce analysis.
  2. Recruitment: searching for and identifying prospective employees and stimulating them to apply for jobs, from internal sources (promotion, transfer) and external sources (advertisements, placement agencies, campus recruitment).
  3. Selection: choosing the most suitable candidates from those who applied, through a process of tests, interviews and screening, so as to reject the unsuitable.
  4. Placement and orientation: placing the selected candidate on the job he/she is found most suited for, and introducing (orienting) them to the organisation's policies, procedures, rules and fellow employees.
  5. Training and development: imparting the specific skills needed for a job (training) and developing broader knowledge/capabilities for growth (development), through both on-the-job and off-the-job methods.
  6. Performance appraisal: systematically evaluating an employee's performance against the job's requirements, to provide feedback and inform decisions on rewards/promotion.
  7. Promotion and career planning: providing career growth opportunities, both to motivate competent employees and to retain them.
  8. Compensation: determining adequate and equitable remuneration for the employees for their contribution to the organisation. …
