Main question — Leakages and Injections in the circular flow of income:

In the circular flow of income, income generated by production does not always flow back entirely as consumption expenditure; some of it is withdrawn ('leaked') while new spending is injected from outside the basic household-firm flow.

Leakages (withdrawals) — income that leaves the circular flow and is not spent on domestically produced consumption:

  • Savings (S) — the part of income households save rather than spend (e.g. a household depositing part of its salary in a bank).
  • Taxes (T) — income paid to the government (e.g. income tax deducted from wages).
  • Imports (M) — spending on foreign-produced goods, which flows out of the domestic economy (e.g. buying an imported mobile phone).

Injections (additions) — spending that enters the circular flow from outside the household-firm sector:

  • Investment (I) — firms' spending on capital goods (e.g. a factory buying new machinery).
  • Government spending (G) — government expenditure on goods/services (e.g. building a highway).
  • Exports (X) — foreign spending on domestically produced goods (e.g. a foreign buyer purchasing Indian textiles).

The economy is in equilibrium when total leakages = total injections (S + T + M = I + G + X); if injections exceed leakages, national income rises, and vice versa.
