Seeding places the strongest teams in different halves/quarters so they can only meet late. Answer: (c) prevent the strongest teams from meeting each other in the early rounds.

Concept understanding — what seeding is and why it exists

In a knock-out (elimination) tournament one defeat ends a team's tournament. If the draw were purely random, the two best teams could be drawn against each other in Round I — one of them would be knocked out immediately, the spectators would be robbed of the contest they came for, and the final could end up being played between two weak sides. That is a poor tournament.

Seeding fixes this. The organisers rank the entrants on known form (last year's results, national ranking, etc.) and place seed 1 and seed 2 at opposite ends of the draw — different halves — with seeds 3 and 4 in the remaining quarters, and so on. The structure of the bracket then does the rest:

  • Seed 1 and Seed 2 are in different halves → they can only meet in the Final.
  • Seeds 1–4 are in different quarters → the top four can only meet from the semi-finals onwards.
Note

Seeding and byes are related but different.

  • The number of byes is decided arithmetically: byes = (next higher power of 2) − N. It cannot be changed by the organisers.
  • Which teams get those byes is where seeding comes in: the byes fall at the top and bottom of each half — exactly the positions where the seeds are planted. So the seeded teams usually do receive the byes, but that is a consequence of the seeding, not its purpose. If N = 8 or 16 (a power of 2) there are zero byes, and seeding is still carried out.

Why (a) is impossible — the counting argument

Every match in a knock-out eliminates exactly one team. To leave one champion from N entrants, N-1 teams must be eliminated, so exactly N-1 matches must be played — whatever the draw looks like. No arrangement of names in the bracket can change that number. …
