When an addicted person stops or reduces their intake of drugs or alcohol, their body reacts with a range of unpleasant physical and psychological symptoms known as withdrawal symptoms.

Addiction to drugs or alcohol is a complex condition where an individual develops a physiological and psychological dependence on a substance. This dependence arises because the body, over time, adapts to the constant presence of the drug or alcohol, integrating it into its normal functioning. The brain and other organ systems begin to rely on the substance to maintain a perceived state of equilibrium.

When the regular supply of the drug or alcohol is suddenly stopped or significantly reduced, the body's systems, which have become accustomed to its presence, are thrown into disarray. This abrupt removal triggers a cascade of adverse reactions as the body struggles to re-establish its natural balance without the substance it has come to depend on. These reactions are collectively known as withdrawal symptoms. They can range in severity depending on the type of substance, the duration and intensity of its use, and the individual's overall health.
