Filariasis is caused by filarial nematode worms transmitted by Culex mosquito bites; the worms damage the lymphatic system, producing the characteristic swelling called elephantiasis.

Causative organism:

Filariasis (also called elephantiasis) is caused by slender, thread-like filarial worms, mainly Wuchereria bancrofti and Wuchereria malayi.

Mode of transmission:

The disease is transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person through the bite of the female Culex mosquito, which acts as the vector. The mosquito ingests microfilariae (larval worms) while biting an infected person, and these develop further inside the mosquito before being transmitted to a new host during a subsequent bite.
