What is a parasite?

A parasite is an organism that lives in close and often prolonged association with another living organism (called the host), obtaining its nutrition from the host's body, usually at the host's expense — this relationship (parasitism) generally harms the host, ranging from mild irritation to serious disease. Parasites may be ectoparasites (living on the host's body surface, e.g., lice, ticks) or endoparasites (living inside the host's body, e.g., intestinal worms like Ascaris, Ancylostoma, Taenia).
