Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) is found along all the tracts of the body that open to the exterior and are lined by mucous membrane (respiratory, GI and urogenital tracts). The spinal cord, being part of the central nervous system with no mucosal lining, does not contain MALT.

MALT is a diffuse system of lymphoid tissue distributed all along the length of the mucosa-lined (moist, mucus-secreting) internal tracts of the body — it is estimated to make up nearly 50% of the lymphoid tissue in the human body, and it constantly guards these tracts against pathogens entering through them.
