The genetic code is a triplet, degenerate, and unambiguous code (also comma-less, non-overlapping, nearly universal).

The genetic code is the set of rules by which information encoded in mRNA nucleotide sequences is translated into the amino acid sequence of proteins. Some of its important characteristics are:

  1. Triplet code: A group of three consecutive nucleotides (a codon) in the mRNA specifies one amino acid. Since there are 4 kinds of nucleotide bases, a triplet arrangement gives 4 cubed = 64 possible codons — enough to code for all 20 standard amino acids, with some redundancy.

  2. Degenerate (redundant): Most amino acids are specified by more than one codon. For example, leucine and serine are each coded for by six different codons. Only tryptophan and methionine have a single codon each. This degeneracy provides some protection against the effects of mutations.

  3. Unambiguous and specific: Although one amino acid may have several codons (degeneracy), a particular codon always codes for one and the same amino acid — it never codes for two different amino acids.
