The genetic code is defined as the relationship between the sequence of nucleotides in mRNA (or the sense strand of DNA) and the sequence of amino acids in the polypeptide it specifies. It was deciphered largely through the work of Har Gobind Khorana, Marshall Nirenberg and Severo Ochoa.
Characteristics of the genetic code:
- Triplet nature: a group of three consecutive nucleotides (a codon) specifies one amino acid. With 4 bases, 4³ = 64 possible codons are generated — more than enough to code for the 20 standard amino acids.
- Degenerate (redundant): most amino acids are coded for by more than one codon (e.g. Leucine has 6 codons), reducing the harmful effect of point mutations.
- Unambiguous: each codon codes for only one specific amino acid — there is no ambiguity in which amino acid a given codon specifies.
- Commaless and non-overlapping: the code is read continuously, in a fixed reading frame, from a start point, three bases at a time, without gaps or punctuation between codons, and each base is part of only one codon. …
