A gene is the functional unit of heredity, and in almost all cellular organisms it is a specific segment of DNA.

Genetic material stores and transmits hereditary information from one generation to the next. In nearly all living organisms (all cellular life, and most viruses), DNA is the genetic material, and a gene is defined as that segment/stretch of DNA which codes for a polypeptide (protein) or a functional RNA (such as tRNA or rRNA) — this is sometimes called a cistron.
