Concentrated H₂SO₄ first protonates the -OH of ethanol to give a good leaving group (protonated alcohol, an oxonium ion).
At 413 K, a second, un-protonated molecule of ethanol acts as a nucleophile and attacks this protonated ethanol in a substitution reaction, displacing water and forming diethyl ether:
2 CH₃CH₂OH --(conc. H₂SO₄, 413 K)--> CH₃CH₂-O-CH₂CH₃ + H₂O
