Amines are basic because the nitrogen atom's lone pair of electrons can accept a proton.

Amines (R-NH2, R2NH, R3N) are organic derivatives of ammonia. Like ammonia, the nitrogen atom in an amine carries a lone pair of electrons that is available for donation. This lone pair can accept a proton (H+) from an acid, or coordinate to a Lewis acid, which is exactly the defining behaviour of a Bronsted-Lowry / Lewis base.

R-NH2 + H+ → R-NH3+
