The +I (electron-donating) effect of the alkyl group increases electron density on nitrogen, so its lone pair binds a proton more strongly than ammonia's — making alkylamines the stronger base.

Basicity of amines depends on the availability of the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom to accept a proton (H+H^+).

In ammonia (NH3NH_3), the nitrogen is bonded to three hydrogen atoms. In an alkylamine (e.g. CH3NH2CH_3NH_2), one hydrogen is replaced by an alkyl group.
