Molecularity is a theoretical whole-number count of colliding species in one elementary step; order is an experimentally-measured exponent sum in the rate law and can be fractional or zero.

Molecularity

  • The number of reactant species (atoms, ions, or molecules) that must collide simultaneously to bring about a chemical reaction in a single elementary step.
  • Always a whole number (1, 2, or rarely 3) — cannot be zero or fractional, since you cannot have a fraction of a colliding molecule.
  • A purely theoretical concept, obtained directly from the balanced stoichiometric equation of an elementary reaction (or of each individual step of a multistep mechanism).
  • Defined only for a single elementary step or for a reaction that occurs in a single step; it has no meaning for the overall equation of a complex, multistep reaction.

Order of reaction

  • The sum of the powers (exponents) of the concentration terms in the experimentally-determined rate law, Rate = k[A]^x[B]^y, order = x + y.
  • Can be zero, a positive or negative integer, or even fractional (e.g. 1.5) — it is whatever the experiment shows, not assumed.
  • Determined experimentally (by monitoring how rate changes with concentration), not from the balanced equation. …
