Ideal solutions follow Raoult's law with zero enthalpy/volume change of mixing; non-ideal (real) solutions deviate, positively or negatively, because A-B interactions differ from A-A and B-B interactions.

Ideal solutions

  • Obey Raoult's law (pA = pA°.xA, pB = pB°.xB) over the entire range of concentration and temperature.
  • Enthalpy of mixing, ΔHmix = 0 (no heat evolved/absorbed on mixing).
  • Volume of mixing, ΔVmix = 0 (total volume = sum of component volumes).
  • Intermolecular forces between A-A, B-B and A-B are all comparable/nearly equal, so a molecule of A experiences nearly the same environment in the mixture as in pure A.
  • Examples: benzene + toluene, n-hexane + n-heptane, ethyl bromide + ethyl iodide.

Non-ideal (real) solutions

These deviate from Raoult's law because the A-B interaction differs from the A-A/B-B interactions. …
