A dc ammeter's deflection follows the average current; since a full cycle of alternating current averages to zero, the pointer cannot settle at any deflection, making it unusable for a.c.

A moving-coil (PMMC) d.c. ammeter works on the principle that a current-carrying coil placed in a radial magnetic field experiences a torque proportional to the instantaneous current, tau proportional to i. Because the coil (with its pointer) has inertia, it cannot follow rapid instantaneous variations of current; its steady deflection is instead proportional to the time-average of the torque, i.e. to the average value of the current over one cycle.
