The mean value of alternating current over a full cycle is zero by symmetry, so it is defined instead over a half cycle, giving Imean=2I0πI_{mean} = \dfrac{2I_0}{\pi}.

Why over a half cycle. For a sinusoidal current I=I0sin⁡ωtI = I_0\sin\omega t, the positive half and negative half are exact mirror images, so averaging over a full cycle always gives zero — that average carries no useful information. Instead, the mean value over a half cycle is used, which is the average of the current's magnitude during one half (say the positive half) of the cycle.

Definition. The mean value of AC over half a cycle is defined as

Imean=1T/2∫0T/2I0sin⁡ωt dtI_{mean} = \frac{1}{T/2}\int_0^{T/2} I_0\sin\omega t\, dt
