Stopping potential is the minimum reverse voltage needed to stop the fastest photoelectrons; threshold frequency is the minimum light frequency needed to cause photoelectric emission at all.

Stopping potential (V0V_0): When light falls on a photosensitive metal, it ejects photoelectrons with a range of kinetic energies up to a maximum value. If a retarding (opposing) potential is applied between the emitter and collector, the photoelectric current decreases as the potential increases, and eventually falls to zero at a particular value of retarding potential — this is called the stopping potential V0V_0. It is related to the maximum kinetic energy of the emitted electrons by eV0=KEmax=12mvmax2eV_0 = KE_{max} = \dfrac{1}{2}mv_{max}^2.
