Since field lines originate from positive charges and terminate on negative charges (or at infinity), for two equal negative charges the lines converge into each charge symmetrically from all directions. Along the line joining the two charges, the individual fields due to each charge point towards that charge, so exactly midway between them, the two fields (each pointing towards its own charge, i.e. in opposite directions along the joining line) cancel out — this midpoint is a null point (neutral point). Near each charge, the pattern is radially inward, and farther away the lines curve so they don't cross the line joining the charges (except at the neutral point), because no field line can intersect another (net field direction is unique everywhere except at a null point).
