Every question listed is defective. Good survey questions must be clear, unambiguous, non-leading, and applicable to the respondent. Each of these breaks one of those rules.

What is wrong with each

  1. How far do you live from the closest market? Vague — 'how far' has no unit or option range. Better: give distance bands (e.g. within 1 km / 1–3 km / above 3 km).
  2. If plastic bags are only 5 per cent of our garbage, should it be banned? Leading question. By stressing 'only 5 per cent' it nudges the respondent towards saying 'no ban'. It also presumes a debatable figure.
  3. Wouldn't you be opposed to increase in price of petrol? Leading and confusingly worded (double negative 'wouldn't … opposed'). It pushes the respondent to agree and is hard to answer neutrally.
  4. Do you agree with the use of chemical fertilisers? Vague — 'the use' is not specified (how much, which crop, in place of what?). The answer will mean different things to different people.
  5. Do you use fertilisers in your fields? Assumes the respondent has fields. It is not applicable to people who do not farm, so it should be preceded by a filter question. …
