A weighted price index assigns weights to commodities by their importance before measuring price change.

In a simple (unweighted) index all commodities are treated as equally important, which can be misleading. A weighted price index corrects this by attaching weights (e.g. quantities consumed or expenditure shares) to each item, so that more important goods influence the index more.
