Imagine you and nine friends line up by height. The person right in the middle — the fifth tallest, the fifth shortest — splits the group into two equal halves. That middle person's height is the median. Now picture that line as a smooth curve on a graph: that curve is an ogive, and reading the median off it is what we're about to do.

The median is the value that divides a sorted dataset into two equal parts. Half the observations lie below it, half above. In economics, this matters because the median is not pulled by extremes. You have two types of ogive:

• Less-than ogive: plots "number of students scoring ≤ marks" against marks. It always rises from 0 to the total N.
• More-than ogive: plots "number of students scoring ≥ marks" against marks. It falls from N to 0.

The median is the value on the x-axis where the less-than ogive reaches $\frac{N}{2}$ (half the total frequency). If you draw both ogives on the same graph, they intersect at exactly the median — because at that point, the number of observations below equals the number above.

Why It Matters in Economics

Economics deals with distributions — of income, expenditure, production, population. The ogive gives you a visual snapshot of the entire distribution. From it you can read not just the median, but also quartiles, deciles, and percentiles. For example:

• The first quartile ($Q_1$) is the value at $\frac{N}{4}$ on the ogive.
• The third quartile ($Q_3$) is at $\frac{3N}{4}$.
• The interquartile range ($Q_3 - Q_1$) tells you how spread out the middle 50% of the data is — a key measure of inequality.
