When protoxylem lies towards the phloem (the peripheral side) rather than towards the centre, the xylem is said to be arranged exarch, and this pattern is typical of roots.

Xylem differentiation does not happen all at once — protoxylem matures first, and metaxylem matures afterward — and the direction in which this maturation proceeds, relative to the centre of the organ, gives rise to two named patterns:
