A stoma (viewed from the leaf surface) is a small pore (A) bounded on either side by two bean-shaped guard cells (B), which together control its opening and closing.

Stomata are minute pores present mainly on the lower epidermis of leaves, each flanked by two specialised, kidney/bean-shaped epidermal cells called guard cells. When guard cells become turgid (swell with water), their unevenly thickened walls cause them to bow outward, opening the pore between them (the stomatal pore/aperture) to allow gas exchange (CO2 in, O2 and water vapour out) and transpiration. When guard cells lose turgor, they straighten and close the pore.
