The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood returning from the whole body via the superior vena cava (from the upper body) and the inferior vena cava (from the lower body).

In the human double circulatory system, deoxygenated blood collected from all body tissues drains into two great veins -- the superior vena cava (draining the head, neck, and upper limbs) and the inferior vena cava (draining the abdomen and lower limbs) -- both of which empty into the right atrium. From there, blood passes through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, and on to the lungs via the pulmonary artery for oxygenation.
