Atherosclerosis is the deposition of plaques that narrows the arteries supplying the heart muscle.

The heart muscle (myocardium) itself is supplied with oxygenated blood by the coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty and fibrous material (plaques, largely of cholesterol) gets deposited within the walls of these (and other) arteries, causing them to narrow and harden, restricting or eventually blocking blood flow — this directly affects the vessels supplying the heart muscle and can lead to a heart attack (myocardial infarction) if blood supply is critically cut off.
