Vital capacity is the total exchangeable air volume — maximum inspiration possible after maximal (forceful) expiration.

Human respiratory (lung) volumes and capacities are defined relative to normal, quiet breathing. Vital capacity (VC) is the maximum volume of air a person can breathe in after a forced (maximal) expiration — equivalently, it is also the maximum volume that can be forcibly expelled after a forceful inspiration. It is the sum of the Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) + Tidal Volume (TV) + Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV), and represents nearly the entire usable lung capacity excluding the residual volume that always remains in the lungs.
