The Wurtz reaction with a mixture of halides
In the Wurtz reaction sodium removes the halogen from two alkyl halides and joins the two alkyl groups by a new C-C bond. When two different halides are present, every possible pairing occurs - each halide with itself and the two with each other - so a mixture of three alkanes results.
The two halides here are:
- 1-iodo-2-methylpropane (isobutyl iodide),
- 2-iodopropane (isopropyl iodide),
The three coupling products
1. Isobutyl + isobutyl
The product is a hexane chain with methyls at C-2 and C-5: 2,5-dimethylhexane.
2. Isobutyl + isopropyl (cross-coupling)
The product is a pentane chain with methyls at C-2 and C-4: 2,4-dimethylpentane.
3. Isopropyl + isopropyl
