An oxidising agent brings about oxidation in another species by accepting electrons from it, and in doing so is itself reduced.

Definition: An oxidising agent (or oxidant) is a substance that, in a redox reaction, causes the oxidation of another substance by removing/accepting electrons from it. In the process, the oxidising agent itself is reduced -- its own oxidation number decreases.

In terms of the three complementary definitions of oxidation/reduction:

  • Electron-transfer view: the oxidising agent gains electrons (is reduced) while making the other reactant lose electrons (oxidised).
  • Oxygen/hydrogen view: an oxidising agent typically adds oxygen to, or removes hydrogen from, the substance it acts on.
