Hess's law says the overall enthalpy change of a reaction depends only on the initial and final states, not on the path/number of steps taken to get there -- a direct consequence of enthalpy being a state function.

Statement: If a reaction takes place in several steps, the standard enthalpy change of the overall reaction is equal to the sum of the standard enthalpy changes of the individual steps, provided the temperature remains constant throughout. Equivalently: the enthalpy change accompanying a chemical reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out in one step or in several steps.

Why it works: Enthalpy (H) is a state function -- its value depends only on the current state of the system (temperature, pressure, composition), not on how that state was reached. Since ΔH for going from reactants to products depends only on the initial and final states, any path (direct or via intermediates) connecting the same two states must give the same total ΔH. If it didn't, one could construct a thermodynamic cycle that creates or destroys energy, violating the first law of thermodynamics (conservation of energy).
