Hess's law (Law of Constant Heat Summation) states that the overall enthalpy change of a reaction is independent of the pathway taken — it depends only on the initial and final states.

Germain Hess formulated this law in 1840, before the first law of thermodynamics was fully established, but it is essentially a consequence of the fact that enthalpy is a state function. Hess's Law states: 'If a reaction takes place in several steps, then its standard reaction enthalpy is the sum of the standard enthalpies of the intermediate reactions into which the overall reaction may be divided at the same temperature.'
