Substitute each given input into the function rule f(x)=2x−5f(x) = 2x - 5 and simplify. The values are f(0)=−5f(0) = -5, f(7)=9f(7) = 9, and f(−3)=−11f(-3) = -11.

A function is a rule that takes an input and produces exactly one output. When we write f(x)=2x−5f(x) = 2x - 5, we're saying "take whatever number xx is, double it, then subtract 5." Evaluating a function at a specific value means replacing every occurrence of xx with that value and computing the result.

The process is mechanical but requires care with signs, especially when substituting negative numbers.

Finding each value:

  1. Evaluate f(0)f(0) Replace xx with 00 in the function rule:

f(0)=2(0)−5=0−5=−5f(0) = 2(0) - 5 = 0 - 5 = -5

  1. Evaluate f(7)f(7) Replace xx with 77:

f(7)=2(7)−5=14−5=9f(7) = 2(7) - 5 = 14 - 5 = 9

  1. Evaluate f(−3)f(-3) Replace xx with −3-3. Notice we're multiplying 22 by a negative number: f(−3)=2(−3)−5=−6−5=−11f(-3) = 2(-3) - 5 = -6 - 5 = -11 …
