Q.A uniform square plate lies in the xx-yy plane with the zz-axis passing through its centre, perpendicular to its face. A small piece QQ of irregular shape, originally located away from the centre (in the region above the xx-axis), is cut out of the plate and re-glued exactly at the centre of the plate, leaving an empty hole at its original off-centre location. What happens to the moment of inertia of the plate about the zz-axis?

(a) increased
(b) decreased
(c) the same
(d) changed in an unpredictable manner

Moment of inertia is I=∑miri2I=\sum m_i r_i^2, so mass counts more the farther it is from the axis. Cutting the piece QQ from a point away from the centre and re-attaching it at the centre moves that mass to zero distance from the zz-axis, removing its μr2\mu r^2 contribution. The moment of inertia therefore decreases.

Concept

Iz=∑imiri2I_z = \sum_i m_i r_i^2, where rir_i is the perpendicular distance of each mass element from the zz-axis.

Reasoning

  1. Originally the piece QQ (mass μ\mu) lay at a distance r>0r>0 from the centre. Its contribution to IzI_z was, by the parallel-axis idea, IQ,cm+μr2I_{Q,cm} + \mu r^2.
  2. After it is moved to the centre, its distance from the zz-axis is essentially zero, so its contribution drops to just IQ,cmI_{Q,cm} (its own small central moment of inertia), losing the μr2\mu r^2 term. …
