Setting C=F=xC=F=x in the Celsius–Fahrenheit conversion relation and solving gives x=−40x=-40.

The relation between the Celsius scale (CC) and the Fahrenheit scale (FF) is:

C5=F−329\dfrac{C}{5} = \dfrac{F-32}{9}

Let the temperature at which both scales give the same numerical reading be xx, so C=F=xC=F=x.

x5=x−329\dfrac{x}{5} = \dfrac{x-32}{9}

Cross-multiplying:

9x=5(x−32)=5x−1609x = 5(x-32) = 5x - 160

9x−5x=−1609x - 5x = -160 …
