Isothermal = constant temperature, heat is free to flow in/out to keep TT fixed; adiabatic = no heat exchange at all, so temperature itself changes as work is done.

Isothermal process: A thermodynamic process carried out at constant temperature. The system is kept in contact with a large heat reservoir through a conducting (diathermic) wall, and the process is carried out slowly enough that heat can flow in or out to keep temperature constant. Since temperature does not change, for an ideal gas the internal energy UU (a function of TT only) also does not change: ΔU=0\Delta U = 0. From the ideal gas law, an isothermal process obeys Boyle's law:

PV=constantPV = \text{constant}

Any heat absorbed is used entirely to do external work (ΔQ=ΔW\Delta Q = \Delta W, from the first law).
