The distinguishing feature is the direction of particle vibration relative to the direction the wave travels: parallel for longitudinal, perpendicular for transverse.

Longitudinal wave: The particles of the medium oscillate back and forth along the same direction in which the wave itself travels. This creates alternating regions of compression (particles crowded together, higher pressure/density) and rarefaction (particles spread apart, lower pressure/density) moving through the medium. Longitudinal waves can travel through solids, liquids and gases, since they only need a restoring force along the direction of travel (a bulk/volume elasticity).

Example: Sound waves travelling through air; a wave sent along a slinky spring by pushing and pulling one end back and forth.
