Transverse waves: particle vibration is perpendicular to wave propagation. Longitudinal waves: particle vibration is parallel (along the same line) as wave propagation.

Transverse wave: In a transverse wave, the particles of the medium oscillate up and down (or side to side) in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave itself travels. This produces alternating crests (highest points) and troughs (lowest points). Examples include waves on a stretched string or rope, ripples on a water surface, and electromagnetic waves (light, radio waves, etc., which don't even need a material medium).
