Law of demand: price and quantity demanded move in opposite directions, ceteris paribus.

The law of demand states that, other things remaining equal (income, tastes, prices of related goods unchanged), the quantity demanded of a commodity is inversely related to its price — when price rises, quantity demanded falls, and when price falls, quantity demanded rises. This gives a downward-sloping demand curve.

Reasons: the law operates because of the (i) law of diminishing marginal utility, (ii) income effect (a fall in price raises real income), (iii) substitution effect (a cheaper good replaces costlier substitutes), and (iv) arrival of new buyers at lower prices.
