The demand curve is negatively sloped because of diminishing marginal utility, the income effect and the substitution effect.

The demand curve slopes downward from left to right (negative slope) because quantity demanded rises when price falls. The reasons are:

  1. Law of diminishing marginal utility — as a consumer has more of a good, its marginal utility falls, so he will buy additional units only at a lower price.
  2. Income effect — a fall in the price of a good raises the consumer's real income (purchasing power), enabling him to buy more.
  3. Substitution effect — when a good becomes cheaper relative to its substitutes, consumers substitute it for the now relatively costlier goods, so demand for it rises.
