Only about 10% of the energy present at a trophic level is transferred to the next trophic level (the Ten Percent Law); the remaining ~90% is lost, mainly as heat during respiration.

Energy flow through an ecosystem is unidirectional (unlike nutrients, which cycle). At each trophic level, organisms use a large fraction of the energy they receive for their own respiration and metabolic maintenance, and that energy is lost to the environment as heat. Only the energy stored in the biomass that is actually eaten by the next trophic level is available to be passed on.
